We have several options for secure file deletion.  We have options for average people, people that work in industry, and those in the government security sectors.  Some examples of deletion algorithms include the RCMP TSSIT OPS-2, the Gutmann wipe, PRNG streams, DOD-Short, DOD 5220.22M, and even algorithms that are fast and wipe your not-so-sensitive stuff for reselling to people who don’t have the capacity to dive deep into your personal files.  Personally I use 3 or 7 wipes of Pseudo Random Number Generator (PRNG) streams.  The 3-Pass I use on non-sensitive systems just for ease of mind, whereas I use the 7-Pass PRNG for things that contain secrets.  The other methods are focused on specific storage medium, whereas when using a random number generator you can randomise the wiping process so that it will have a good effect on any and all types of storage media.  A full wipe often takes two to four days for everything to complete, but you can be assured that your private data is truly forever wiped.

With most computer repair and upgrading shops they will completely wipe your system’s data and start fresh.  But what if you have software installed that you don’t want to lose?  By using drive mirroring your software can be preserved when upgrading your drive to a larger or newer storage medium.  The data is copied from your storage device to a new device, without deleting the apps that are stored there.  Let’s say that you’ve purchased Microsoft Office.  If a computer system was wiped and Office removed you would require a new license for that software to put it back on to your computer system.  When that software isn’t removed there is a lot of stress saved from taking place.  You also have the option to have your drive backed up to an intermediary storage device, have your original drive secure deleted, and have the files copied back, and then wipe the intermediary device.  After this the drive would have its important files copied to a USB stick and you will have your system in a state of proper backup fitness.  The software would remain, be anti-virus scanned, and your documents, videos, and music transferred onto a large USB stick (flash drive).  This would complete the process of backing up for the long-term.  In some instances it may be wise to backup to a DVD disc as once the burning of the disc is finalised it can not be deleted by malware.
